Late Rally Falls Short for Storm, 84-79

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College men's basketball team was defeated by the Cedarville University Yellow Jackets on Thursday (Jan. 25) night by a final score of 84-79.

Cedarville opened the game with an 8-4 run, forcing a Lake Erie timeout three minutes in. Lake Erie went on a 6-2 run to tie the game at ten, with a layup from Gabe Kynard (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) before the under 16 media timeout. The teams exchanged baskets following the timeout before Cedarville took a 15-14 lead with 13:14 left in the first half. Kynard put the Storm up 17-15 with a three pointer a couple seconds later. The Yellow Jackets scored four straight points before Lamont Rhodes (Bedford, Ohio / Bedford) tied the contest twice with two jumpers. Cedarville led 24-21 with less than eight minutes left in the first half. The Yellow Jackets pushed the lead to four twice in the next two minutes. After Cedarville led 28-24, Kynard and Rhodes combined for four straight points, tying the game at 28. Cedarville answered with a 6-0 run that was quickly erased by two three pointers by Ryan Middendorf. Erron James (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville Central) made a steal and a fast break layup in the closing seconds that forced the twelfth tie of the first half. Lake Erie and Cedarville were knotted at 38 at halftime.

The Storm opened the second half with an 11-5 run as Lake Erie led 49-43 with 15 minutes left. Cedarville regained the lead with a 9-0 swing over the next two minutes, taking a 52-49 lead. Rhodes tied the game at 54 with a jumper at the 11:19 mark. Over the next four minutes, Cedarville opened a 65-58 lead with seven minutes left after an 11-4 run. The Yellow Jackets pushed the lead to ten with five minutes left. The Storm pulled within four points with five seconds left following a three pointer from Michael Morris (New Palestine, Ind. / New Palestine).  Lake Erie fell 84-79 in the contest.

Kynard led the Storm with 23 points, including six free throws. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Rhodes added 12 points and eight rebounds. Brogan Scott (Wadsworth, Ohio / Wadsworth) and Middendorf each had nine points.

The Storm will host Davis & Elkins on Tuesday (Jan. 30) evening at 5:30 PM.
