(PAINESVILLE, Ohio) – The 2018-19 season tipped off Friday evening in the Osborne Center, but it didn't go as well as Lake Erie had hoped in a 72-57 defeat to Ashland. The former divisional rivals squared off in the season opener with each other for the second consecutive year.
Gabe Kynard picked up where he left off from a season ago as he poured in 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds. He was joined in double-figures by Harrison Riggs who added 12 points and four caroms.
A layup by Kynard put the Storm within three at 20-17 with 7:22 left in the first half, but the Eagles proceeded to close the frame on a 15-3 run to take control. Lake Erie equaled Ashland in the second half, but was kept at bay each time a run was made.
Ashland was led by Drew Noble who scored 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Lake Erie will return to action on Sunday as it heads up to the Motor City to take on another GLIAC opponent in Wayne State. It will be a men's and women's twin bill with the women starting things at 2 p.m. with the men's game following at approximately 4.
