  • NABC Places Kynard On All-District Team

    Previously the general consensus was Gabe Kynard was one of the most respected and feared players on the basketball court by coaches around the region. That has now become set in stone as the senior guard was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District Team for the Midwest.
  • D2CCA Names Kynard All-Region A Second Time

    There was some good news delivered this weekend as Gabe Kynard was named to the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) all-region team. He becomes a two-time selection and moves on to the All-American ballot.

These are all individual honors that Gabe Kynard has earned during his legendary career with the Lake Erie Storm the last four years. Add All-American to the list.

    Gabe Kynard will undoubtedly go down in the record books as one of the best student-athletes in Lake Erie College history. Now he’ll do the same in the G-MAC after he was named the 2020 Player of the Year. It’s the first time the Storm have had a player of the year.

    A tall order lies ahead for the Lake Erie men’s basketball team as it heads to the postseason for the third consecutive year. The Storm (14-14) were the middle team in a three-way tiebreaker to be seeded No. 7 in the G-MAC Tournament and thus earning a trip to Findlay (20-7).

    Symptoms of March Madness started to rear their head in the G-MAC Tournament quarterfinals Tuesday, but Lake Erie was unable to spread the fever as it fell 85-69 to Findlay. The No. 7 Storm end the year at 14-15, while the No. 2 Oilers move on to host the semifinals and finals of the men’s bracket at 21-7.

    Lake Erie wrapped up the regular season with an 82-72 defeat at the hands of Walsh on Saturday afternoon. Despite the defeat, five Storm seniors put on a show for a packed Osborne Center.

    From one Osborne to another, Lake Erie will travel south for about an hour and a half to battle Malone in a pivotal G-MAC contest Saturday afternoon. The Storm (14-12, 8-8) are in the hunt for a third consecutive conference tournament berth, but sit in the eighth and final place in the ratings rankings. The Pioneers (15-11, 9-7) appear to be in good position for another postseason as well in the fifth spot.
  • Riggs Scores Career High In OT Loss At Malone

    Overtime was a heartbreaker again for Lake Erie as it fell 88-86 to Malone in the penultimate game of the regular season at Osborne Hall Saturday afternoon. The loss dropped the Storm to 14-13 overall and 8-9 in the conference, while the Pioneers locked themselves into a playoff spot and now stand at 16-11 overall and 10-7 in the G-MAC.

    For the second consecutive year Gabe Kynard has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District District 4 First Team. Arguably the program’s best basketball players in history, the senior from Toledo has shown he is also just as impressive in the classroom as an accounting major.

    Lake Erie fell to Findlay in G-MAC action by a score of 72-64 at the Osborne Center on Thursday evening. The loss drops the Storm to 14-12 overall and 8-8 in the conference, while the Oilers strengthened their lead at the top of the league at 19-6 overall and 14-2 in the G-MAC.

    It was like a bad nightmare came back to haunt Lake Erie as it fell to Cedarville 98-91 in a barnburner at the Osborne Center Saturday afternoon. In both games this season, the Yellow Jackets (16-8, 11-3) hit 3-pointers as time was winding down to stun the Storm (14-11, 8-7) before going ahead in overtime.

    Seven players scored in double-figures to help Lake Erie to a dominating win over Tiffin on Saturday afternoon. The win broke a five game skid on the road for the Storm (14-10, 8-6) and was their fifth consecutive win against the Dragons (8-16, 2-12).

    Kaleb Vaughn recorded his first double-double of the season in leading Lake Erie to a 71-62 bounce-back win over Kentucky Wesleyan at the Osborne Center Saturday afternoon. For the Storm (13-9, 7-5), they avenged last Thursday’s loss and picked up much-needed points in the G-MAC ratings against the Panthers (7-12, 6-6).

    Lake Erie hosts Kentucky Wesleyan in its only game this week and just nine days after their game down in Owensboro. The Storm (12-9, 6-5) are looking to break a modest two-game skid that started with the Panthers (7-11, 6-5) who will play them for the second-straight time.

    The Lake Erie men’s basketball team returns home for the first time in the New Year with a G-MAC clash against Malone. The Storm enter with an overall record of 9-7 and are 3-3 in the G-MAC. The Pioneers are 9-6 overall and 3-2 in the league, but are in eighth place in the G-MAC point rating system behind Lake Erie and Ohio Dominican who are tied for sixth.

    Presence at the free throw line was the difference in Saturday’s game between Lake Erie and Hillsdale as the Storm fell 71-59 to the Chargers. Both teams made the same amount of field goals both inside and outside of the arc, but the hosts took 21 more foul shots and made 18 overall on the day.

    The decade ended with on a positive note for Lake Erie as it had little trouble disposing of Thiel 91-55 at the Osborne Center on New Year’s Eve. Despite having only one day of practice after the break, the Storm (9-5) shot just a shade under 50% in outgunning the Tomcats (2-7).
