PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Sophomore Mike Guarino (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) shot a 3-over 75 to finish in a tie for 14th place at the season-opening Lake Superior State University Men's Invitational that concluded Sunday (Sept. 12). As a team, Lake Erie College placed 10th of 13 squads at The Oakes in Kincheloe, Mich.
Guarino finished with a 153 overall, the fifth lowest score at the event. Saginaw Valley State's Nate Kelly was the individual medalist with a 143.
Junior Frank Whites III (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) closed with a second-round 79 for a 155 two-day total, tying for 27th place. Senior C.J. Milo (Painesville, Ohio/Mentor) tied for 40th at 79-80=159 while junior Matt Hennessey (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) rounded out the Storm's scoring quartet.
As a team, Lake Erie improved by four strokes to a 314 on day two and finished with a team score of 632. That was six strokes behind Ferris State in ninth, but 24 strokes better than the host Lakers who were 11th with 656. Findlay (608) took the team title over a field that featured the dozen golf-sponsoring Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) teams.
"I was pleased with our showing for the first time out this season and in a very good field with the entire GLIAC represented," said head coach Milt Johnson. "We have plenty that we have to work on, but I thought we competed well against the other teams in the league."
Lake Erie travels to the greater Columbus area next weekend for the Ohio Dominican University Kisor Fall Classic Sept. 16-17.
