PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Behind three fourth quarter goals, the Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team held off host Molloy College, 7-6, to win its third straight game overall on Saturday (March 19) in Rockville Center, N.Y.
Sophomore Kyle Larsen (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) scored twice with the Storm (3-1, 1-0 ECC) trailing by a goal and classmate Joeyjohn French (Tully, N.Y./Tully) netted what proved to be the game-winner with 6:12 remaining to snap a six-game East Coast Conference (ECC) losing streak.
Keegan Bal (Coquitlam, B.C./Centennial Secondary) scored three goals, including a pair in the first half as Lake Erie took a 2-1 halftime lead against a team that defeated them 13-3 a year ago.
The Lions (1-5, 0-2 ECC) rallied for four goals in the third, with Jimmy Davis and Pat Fenning each scoring twice, and took a 5-4 lead into the fourth.
The score stayed that way through four-plus minutes into the final frame before Larsen's unassisted goal knotted the score at the 10:06 mark. He added another unassisted score a little over three minutes later to put Lake Erie ahead. Thirty seconds after that, the Storm took advantage of a man-up situation as sophomore Josh Becker (Salamanca, N.Y./Salamanca) fed French to make it 7-5.
Jon Scorcia brought Molloy within one with 4:12 to go, but sophomore goalkeeper Ian Wolfe (Bridgeville, Pa./Chariters Valley) kept the Lions off the board the rest of the way, recording three of his 15 saves in the final four minutes to pick up his second win of the season in net (2-1).
French finished with a pair of goals and an assist, matching Bal's three points. Freshman Adam Bakular-Evans (Courtenay, B.C./G.P. Vanier) had two assists.
The win was Lake Erie's first in ECC play since an 11-9 win at home over Chestnut Hill College on April 1, 2010. Prior to the victory, the Storm had been 0-6 in conference road games.
Lake Erie is scheduled to play its home opener on Tuesday night, March 22, against second-ranked Mercyhurst College at 6 p.m. at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.
