PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Sixth-ranked Mercyhurst College jumped out to an 8-2 first-half lead and went on to an 11-4 victory over the Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team Tuesday night, March 22, spoiling the Storm's home opener at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium and snapping a three-game LEC winning streak.
The Storm (3-2, 1-1 ECC) trailed 3-0 before sophomore Kyle Larsen (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) put Lake Erie on the board 13 minutes into the contest. It was a three-goal game at 5-2 before reigning East Coast Conference Player of the Week Kyle Kallay scored twice as the Lakers (5-1, 3-1 ECC) took a six-goal lead into the break.
The Lakers scored once in the third period and Kallay capped what was a 5-0 Laker run with 12:56 left in the fourth quarter to make the score 10-2.
The Storm scored a pair of goals in the closing minutes, one by sophomore Keegan Bal (Coquitlam, B.C./Centennial Secondary) and the second goal of the game from freshman Trevor Tarte (Amherstburg, Ont./Kiski Prep).
Kallay led all players with four goals and Brady Heseltine added a pair off the bench for the Lakers. Mercyhurst outshot the Storm 34-14 and keeper Zach Nash was credited with seven saves.
Sophomore Ian Wolfe (Bridgeville, Pa./Chariters Valley) tallied nine saves in net for the Storm.
Lake Erie will look to get back on the winning track next Tuesday, March 29, with an East Coast Conference game at Seton Hill University.
