Storm Advances to NCAA Semis with 15-7 Win Over Tampa

PAINESVILLE, Ohio— The Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Division-II Semifinals with a 15-7 win over the University of Tampa Saturday (May 9) in Painesville.

The Storm will face Limestone College next Sunday in South Carolina.  The Saints defeated Lindenwood University 15-9 in the other South Region game played today.

Reagan Harding (Saskatoon, Sask./Bishop James Mahoney) scored the opening game off a pass from Courtland Black-Araujo (Bowmanville, Ont./St. Stephen Secondary/Onondaga CC) five minutes in.  Conor Whipple answered for the Spartans with an unassisted goal.  Harding responded with his second goal of the quarter to put the Storm back ahead.  Austin Bishop (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) increased the lead to two with a goal late in the first quarter off an assist by Mitchell Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg).

Zak Goldbach opened the second quarter with a man-up goal from Whipple to cut the lead to one.  Connor Ward (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) provided the answer for the Storm with a goal off a pass by Shafer to put the Storm up 4-2.  The Storm offense continued to roll with Mitchell Stokes (New Westminster, B.C./New Westminster Secondary) and Lucas Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) scoring late goals to increase the advantage to 6-2 at the half.

Jake Schmidt opened the second half with two goals for the Spartans.  Mitchell and Lucas Shafer responded by hooking up for two straight goals to push the lead to four.  Those two goals started a 5-0 run for the Storm with three goals from Mitchell Shafer and one apiece from Lucas Shafer and Robert Pelkey (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport/Finger Lakes CC).  Zak Goldbach cut the Storm run short with his second goal of the game but the Storm fired back with a pair of goals by Lucas Shafer and Mitch Redmond (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley).  Schmidt scored his third goal of the game but Bishop netted his second to seal the win for the Storm.

Mitchell Shafer led the Storm with four goals and two assists.  Lucas Shafer netted three and assisted on two.  Bishop had two goals and two assists.  Harding had two goals and one assist.  Pelkey, Ward, Redmond and Stokes had one apiece.  Black-Araujo had two assists.

Tom Lipomi (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) picked up the win in net, making 12 saves.  Bishop led the Storm with three caused turnovers.  Harding and Black-Araujo had three groundballs apiece.
