TAMPA—The fourth-ranked Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team fell in a close contest at sixth-ranked University of Tampa Saturday (March 5) in a nonconference game.
The Storm got off to a hot start, scoring three unanswered goals in the first quarter. They increased their lead to four with the first goal of the second quarter. However, the Spartans owned the rest of the half, outscoring the Storm 5-0 to take a 5-4 lead into the half.
With under five minutes to play in the third quarter, the Storm tied the game at five but the Spartans answered minutes later to take a one goal lead into the final frame.
The Spartans scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter, increasing their lead to three. The Storm cut the lead to two, 8-6, but the Spartans once again answered with a goal. Late in the fourth, the Storm added one more goal but it was not enough to overcome the Spartans advantage.
Edmond Renaud (Carlisle, Ont./Waterdown/Pfieffer) led the Storm's offense with three goals. Courtland Black-Arajuo (Bowmanville, Ont./St. Stephen Secondary/Onondoga) added two goals while Mitchell Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) had a goal and an assist. Lucas Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) also scored a goal.
Tom Lipomi (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) made 11 saves in net for the Storm.
The Storm is back in action March 12 in Painesville, playing host to second-ranked Le Moyne College.
