PAINESVILLE, Ohio— The seventh-ranked Lake Erie College lacrosse team fell to second-ranked Le Moyne University 22-9 in their home opener Saturday (March 12).
Mitchell Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) led the Storm offense with four goals and one assist. Courtland Black-Araujo (Bowmanville, Ont./St. Stephen/Onondaga) scored three goals. Brandon Donohue (South Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon Jude) and Kole Robinson (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) scored a goal apiece.
The Dolphins jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Black-Araujo got the Storm on the board. Late in the first quarter, the Dolphins scored on a man-up opportunity to give them a 5-1 lead after one. The Dolphins continued to control the pace of the game in the second quarter, scoring six goals before the Storm got on the scoreboard. With 9-0 seconds remaining, Black-Araujo scored his second goal. However, the Dolphins added a goal just before the horn to take a 12-2 lead into the break.
After the Dolphins scored the first goal of the second half on a man-up opportunity, the Storm scored two straight goals. The first came from Robinson on an assist from Shafer. Shafer then scored the second goal unassisted. The Dolphins scored three straight but Black-Araujo and Shafer netted goals in the waning minutes of the quarter to cut the lead to 16-6 entering the fourth.
Le Moyne offense produced six goals in the fourth. The Storm scored the final three goals of the game, one by Donohue and two by Shafer, but it was not enough to overcome the Dolphins' advantage.
The Storm is back at home March 16 to face Ohio Valley University to open ECAC play.
