GREENSBURG, Pa.—The eighth-ranked Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team faced a tough ECAC test against ninth-ranked Seton Hill University Saturday (April 2), coming out on top 14-8.
Mitchell Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) got the Storm on the board first with an unassisted goal less than a minute in. However, the Griffins scored the final three goals of the quarter to take control early on.
The Storm offense came alive in the second quarter, outscoring the Griffins 6-0. Courtland Black-Araujo (Bowmanville, Ont./St. Stephen Secondary/Onondaga) scored twice Lucas Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) had a goal and an assist in the quarter. Connor Ward (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg/Adrian), Mitchell Shafer and Edmond Renaud (Carlisle, Ont./Waterdown District/Pfeiffer) had a goal in the quarter while Mitchell Stokes (New Westminster, B.C./New Westminster Secondary) and Tim Bay (Canadaigua, N.Y./Canadaigua Academy) had assists.
The Griffins cut the lead to two, 7-5, with two goals early in the third. Mitchell Shafer pushed the lead back to three with his third goal, assisted by Stokes. However, the Griffins once again scored two straight, reducing the lead to one. After the Griffins matched a John Kezerian (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic), assisted by Stokes, the Storm offense heated up once again. Black-Araujo scored two goals to close the quarter, assisted by Renaud and Mitchell Stokes, to gain an 11-8 lead heading into the fourth.
Stokes scored two man-up goals to start the fourth, the first assisted by Lucas Shafer. With 11 minutes left, Black-Araujo scored his fifth goal of the game. That goal proved to be the final one of the game as the Storm defense held tough for the win.
Black-Araujo led the Storm with five goals. Stokes tallied five points on three goals and two assists. Mitchell Shafer scored three goals while assisting on one more. Lucas Shafer had a goal and two assists while Renaud had a goal and an assist. Kezerian had a goal while Bay had an assist.
Brandon Donohue (South Buffalo, N.Y./St. Bishop Timon Jude) and Lucas Shafer had four groundballs.
Bret Swan (Acton, Ont./Halton Hills) was dominant on faceoffs, winning 15-of-22 while collecting a team-high five groundballs.
Tom Lipomi (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) picked up the win in net, making seven saves.
The Storm is back in action April 7 at the University of Indianapolis.
