Storm Battle in Physical Game, Tie West Virginia Wesleyan, 1-1

PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Lake Erie men's soccer team came away with a 1-1 tie in a heated match against West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday (Sept. 19) afternoon at Slattery Field. The Storm (1-5-1) now have a two-match unbeaten streak.
The game, which featured six cards and 32 fouls, was scoreless into the 43rd minute, when senior Everton Blake (Clardenon, Jamaica/Clardenon/Lakeland CC) poked his team-leading third goal of the season from two yards out. The goal came off a redirection from senior midfielder Jacob Drake (Streetsboro, Ohio/Crestwood).
At that point, the Storm was already playing with a man advantage after Bobcats keeper Andrew Baldasare played a ball with his hands outside the penalty area on a breakaway by freshman striker Rob Searles (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin). Baldasare, who leaped and knocked the ball away with his hands, was charged with a red card and sent off.
Just eight minutes after halftime, West Virginia Wesleyan's Brett Fackenthal scored on a one-on-one breakaway against Lake Erie keeper Jared Daly (Hubbard, Ohio/Ursuline).
The game went scoreless from there, though physical play dominated throughout as each team was whistled for 16 fouls. The Bobcats had another player sent off in the 102nd minute, so the Storm played with a two-man advantage, but could not capitalize.
Twice in the second half, Storm sweeper Jay Sutter (Batavia, Ohio/Amelia) headed corner kicks off the crossbar that could have given Lake Erie the lead.
The Storm out-shot the Bobcats, 18-7, and held a 10-5 advantage on corner kicks. Daly stopped three shots in net for Lake Erie.
Lake Erie will take a week off before returning to the pitch on Saturday (Sept. 26) to take on Ohio Valley as part of a double-header at Slattery Field. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.
