PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Lake Erie College redshirt junior goalkeeper Ricky Carreira (Toronto, Ont./Dante Alighieri Academy) has been selected to play for the newly formed AFC Cleveland Soccer Club.
Carreira, a two-time All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team goalie, finished second in the GLIAC with 98 saves in 2011. In 2010, Carreira led NCAA Division II with 168 saves. He was in the goal for two shutouts in 2011 and even assisted a key goal against Northwood in a 2-1 overtime win on Oct. 16. Against Saginaw Valley State on Oct. 14, Carriera made his 280th career save to break the Lake Erie record.
"This is a great chance for Ricky to play with and against some outstanding players," said Lake Erie Head Coach Davie Carmichael. "Getting to see Ricky play twice a year, the coaches within the GLIAC have certainly taken note of his tremendous skill and we hope AFC Cleveland allows him to show off his talents in front of a wider audience."
AFC Cleveland is a soccer club that is plays in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). AFC Cleveland is wholly owned and operated by Sports Management Group LLC and will play home contests at Byers Field in Parma, Ohio.
The team will play 12 matches regionally in the Midwest Division of the 48-team NPSL, recognized by the United States Soccer Federation and FIFA as a Division IV league.
