Storm Look to Start the Season Off Strong at Maryville University

PAINESVILLE, Ohio-- The Lake Erie College men's soccer team opens the 2012 season against Maryville University Saturday (Aug. 31) at 5 p.m. EST (4 p.m. at site). That contest kicks off the team's opening weekend which also features a Sunday afternoon (Sept. 1) contest at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

The Storm are looking to continue building on the success of last year's debut for head coach Davie Carmichael when they went 8-9-3 overall (5-5-2 GLIAC) and finished second at the East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II Postseason Tournament.

The Storm's offense returns senior forward Randy Danso (Toronto, Canada/North Count Community College), a first-team All-GLIAC selection in 2011. Danso scored a season high six goals and added two assists last year. Junior midfielder Nathan Bias also returns for the offense after scoring five times in 2011. Junior Stewart Bath (Billingham, England/Billingham Campus School/Averett University), who led the Storm with four assists in 2011, also returns for offense.

Sophomore Willy Cognee (Montreal Quebec, Canada), along with classmate James Grogan (Leeds, England/Averett University), will anchor the Storm on defense. Cognee was the 2011 GLIAC Freshmen of the Year. The Storm defense allowed 1.5 ppg in 2011. A big part of that was due to the play of goalkeeper Ricky Carreira, a two-time First-Team All-GLIAC recipient, who has moved on to the professional ranks. Sophomore Sam Etherton (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) and incoming freshman Filip Ljubevski (Ajax, Ont./Pikering) look to fill the void in net.

After the two-game trip to the "Show Me State", the Storm return home to host Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) preseason favorite Notre Dame College on Saturday, Sept. 8.
