PAINESVILLE, Ohio-- The Lake Erie College men's soccer team opens up the home portion of their 2012 schedule Saturday (Sept. 8) against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) preseason favorite Notre Dame College at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium at 1 p.m.
The Storm (1-1) are returning from a two-game season-opening road trip in Missouri in which they split the contests. Lake Erie opened up the season on August 31stwith a double-overtime victory over Maryville Friday (Aug. 31st) last . The game was scoreless until the 109thminute when sophomore Cory Bucur (Bedford, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) found the back of the net for the game-winner. Freshmen goalkeeper Filip Ljubevski (Ajax, Ont./Pikering)recorded five saves in his collegiate debut. The Storm rode the momentum of this win to an early advantage over the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday (Sept. 1st) as freshman Anthony Novak (Toronto, Ont./St. Mary Catholic)found the back of the net in the fourth minute off a pass from classmate Ryan Gibson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto). Lake Erie, which played the majority of the second half two men down, was unable to hold onto the lead, dropping the contest 4-1.
Notre Dame College (1-0) enters the 2012 season as the preseason favorite in the GLIAC. The Falcons received seven first place votes in the preseason poll. Notre Dame opened its season with a 2-1 victory on the road against the University of Indianapolis. Tom Owens and Jacob Sheppard recorded goals for the Falcons, who have won 20 straight overall.
The soccer match kicks off a weekend of home events for the Lake Erie Storm and will be followed by the Storm Club Kickoff Tailgate party in Recreation Park.
The Storm then travel to Urbana University on Tuesday, Sept. 11, for a nonconference match.
