PAINESVILLE, Ohio—Down 2-1 with less than two minutes to play in regulation, sophomore James Grogan (Leeds, England/Averett University) tied up the contest and freshman Anthony Novak (Toronto, Ont./St. Mary Catholic) scored three minutes into the extra period to complete a thrilling, come from behind overtime victory for Lake Erie College (2-3) against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) newcomer Walsh University (1-3), 3-2, at the Jack Britt Memorial Stadium in Painesville Friday (Sept. 14).
The Cavaliers picked up the first goal of the game in the fifth minute. Jeremy Dietrich beat Lake Erie goalkeeper Filip Ljubevski (Ajax, Ont./Pickering) on his left side to put Walsh ahead 1-0. The Storm responded seven minutes later when sophomore Cory Bucur scored his second goal of the season off a floater from 25 yards out. Dietrich put Walsh back ahead, 2-1, in the 23rd minute, from ten yards out, for his second goal of the match.
The second half saw the two teams evenly matched. Down 2-1 with less than two minutes to play, sophomore James Grogan found the back of the net for the Storm, from five yards out, to tie the game at two and send the match to overtime.
Three minutes into the extra period, Walsh's DIllion Parson's shot was blocked on its way to the net. The Storm picked up the rebound for the counter attack. Freshman Anthony Novak led the charge for the Storm, and scored on a shot from five yards out, past Cavaliers' goalie Frank Sanabria, to complete the come from behind victory for Lake Erie.
The Storm led the Cavaliers in shots (14-13), as well as corners (8-1). Ljubevski ended the game with three saves in net. The Storm is now 2-0 in overtime games this season.
Lake Erie returns to the pitch Sunday (Sept. 16) to host GLIAC foe Ohio Dominican at 4 p.m. at The Britt in Painesville.
