Pioneers Second Half Surge Spoils Storm's Senior Day

PAINESVILLE, Ohio-- Malone University spoiled the Lake Erie College men's soccer team Senior Day with a three second half goals as the Pioneer defeated the Storm 3-2 Friday (Nov. 1). 

Stuart Campbell (Glassgow, Scotland/Glassgow Academy) led the Storm with two goals.

In the 18th minute, Anthony Novak (Toronto, Ont./St. Mary Catholic) intercepted a pass deep in Malone territory and passed it to Campbell who scored on a shot from just outside the box to give the Storm the first goal of the game. The Storm held the Pioneers to just two shots in the first half. 

Malone was able to even the score in the 67th minute when Rubem Miranda's strike, assisted by Christian Schmikla, beat Filip Ljubevski (Ajax, Ont./Pikering) to the far post. The Pioneers broke up the tie in the 74th minute when Ryan Brumbaugh scored on a strike from four-yards out, giving Malone the 2-1 advantage. Josh Abend converted on a pentaly kick for Malone in the 87th minute to build the lead to 3-1. Campbell scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Vincent Wells (Lexington, Ohio/Lexington) in the final seconds but it was not enough, as the Storm fell 3-2. 

Pioneer goalkeeper Felipe Monteiro made nine saves for the win. 

The Storm will host their first round matchof the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs Tuesday (Nov. 5) at Slattery Field on the campus of Lake Erie College.
