PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College men's soccer team entered Senior Day with the scenario of needing at least a tie against Walsh to clinch a playoff berth. The Storm battled the Walsh Cavaliers to a 0-0 draw in double overtime on Sunday (Oct. 30).
Lake Erie clinched the fourth seed in the GLIAC Tournament with an 8-6-4 overall record and a 6-6-4 GLIAC mark.
Storm Head Coach Kevin Brenner said, "Today was a special day and we wanted to so badly win for this instrumental group of senior players, who have set a new benchmark for future players to come. We are delighted to get the necessary point to clinch our fourth straight playoff appearance for the program, all credit to the players and the coaching staff! We had a very strong performance and effort from the players today as we dominated the game but were unlucky to have two goals called back! We are looking forward to playing the number one seed SVSU on Friday as they are a quality team. I don't believe they have seen our best effort yet this regular season, we couldn't be more excited to play them again on Friday!"
Lake Erie outshot the Cavaliers 9-6 in the first half but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
In the second half, the Storm dominated the offensive front as they took seven shots, compared to one shot for Walsh.
For the two overtime periods, Lake Erie shot the ball four times, while the Cavaliers shot twice, both in the first overtime.
In total, Lake Erie outshot the visitors 20-9 with Stuart Campbell (Glasgow, Scotland / Glasgow Academy) taking four shots for the Storm.
Alfredo Gallo (Lancaster, N.Y. / Lancaster) made two saves as the Storm completed their tenth shutout of the year.
Lake Erie will travel to face the #1 seed, Saginaw Valley State on Friday (Nov. 4) in the GLIAC Tournament.
