ROCHESTER, NY- The Lake Erie College men's soccer team opened the 2017 season with a non-conference road matchup at Roberts Wesleyan College on Thursday (August 31).
The Storm defeated the Redhawks 3-2 in the season opener for both teams.
In the 20th minute, Lake Erie jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal. Ezekiel Ebenezer (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach) put the Storm in front after he put a shot past the Roberts Wesleyan keeper. The Redhawks tied the game with a deflection of a free kick in the 41st minute.
The game was tied at halftime despite the Storm having a 6-3 shot advantage.
Ebenezer struck again in the 50th minute with his second goal of the game, assisted by Ryan Watson (Murrysville, Pa. / Franklin Regional). Five minutes later, Watson fed Javier Borreguero (Nigran, Spain / Los Sauces School) and Borreguero drove it home from 18 yards out. In the 64th minute, Roberts Wesleyan cut the deficit back to one with a goal.
The Redhawks attempted to tie the game late in the second half but the Storm defense held strong.
Lake Erie finished with a 13-8 shot advantage over the Redhawks.
Ebenezer scored two goals in his Storm debut while Watson assisted on two Storm scores.
The Storm will host Slippery Rock in the home opener on Sunday (Sept. 4) at 1:00 PM.
