(INDIANAPOLIS) – The first week of the season was a great one for Lake Erie goalkeeper Tom John (Jr., Ahrensburg, Germany / Tennis Borussia Berlin) as he was announced as the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. John led the Storm to two clean sheets in regional wins against Ashland and Slippery Rock.
On Thursday's opener against the reigning GLIAC tournament champion Eagles, John obtained the shutout on three saves in the double-overtime thriller. He followed up with four more stops in a 3-0 victory on Saturday against the Rock.
Guiding the back line, both opponents combined for just 12 shots.
Now John and the rest of the Storm prepare for the conference opener at Malone. The Pioneers opened up the season with a 2-1 win at Daemen before drawing even 1-1 with Roberts Wesleyan.
Malone is a familiar opponent of Lake Erie as the teams have met 15 times in the 25-year history of the men's soccer program. The Green and White hold the all-time series advantage 7-6-2, but have revenge on their mind after the Pioneers took both games a year ago.
The game will be played at Jack Hazen Field, the first game on campus for Malone since September 2017. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
