(CANTON, Ohio) – Jonathan Carr gave Lake Erie its second overtime win in three games with a goal in the 98th minute to give the Storm a 1-0 victory over Malone on Tuesday afternoon. The Storm (3-0) also garnered their third consecutive shutout in their G-MAC season opener.
Early on it was evident that it would be a defensive game as both teams combined for just six shots in the first half and three in the first 35 minutes. Two of those first three were by Malone, but the reigning G-MAC Defensive Player of the Week Tom John was able to save both.
From there the Lake Erie backline locked down and didn't allow another shot on goal the rest of the game. In fact the Pioneers only managed five more shots the rest of the game. In the meantime the Storm were able to pick up momentum and pressure the Malone defense with 12 shots in the second half.
In extra time, it appeared as a second overtime would be needed, but Michael Samways and Rodrigo Bonfim were able to connect with a streaking Carr up the left side. Carr was able to rip a shot from about 10 yards out, and while Malone's keeper was able to get a hand on it initially, the ball carried into the left side of the net to end the game.
The Green and White will continue their road show with a pair of games against GLIAC foes this weekend. The first will be against Davenport on Friday with a start time of 7 p.m. The Storm will stay in Grand Rapids and also play Northern Michigan on the neutral grounds of Davenport on Sunday at 1 p.m.
