(Findlay, Ohio) - In stunning fashion the No. 7 Lake Erie men's soccer team continued its winning ways Friday afternoon with a 1-0 overtime victory over Findlay at DeHaven Field. The Storm has now won three overtime matches with the golden goal.
The Storm only needed three minutes of extra time to secure victory. Lake Erie (14,1, 10,1 G-MAC) has now continued to stretch for the most wins in program history. The loss drops the Oilers to (8-5-1, 5-5-1).
Forward Javier Borreguero (Nigran, Spain) was able to kick the ball in from deep into the back of the net for the win. The goal now gives Borreguero four for the season and his third game winner. It was off the foot of Borreguero that gave the Storm its first win of the year dropping Ashland.
The match was evenly contested on the stat sheet as Lake Erie outshot Findlay 11-7. The Storm defense limited the Oilers to just one shot attempts in the first half.
Lake Erie had a chance to score late on a play in the second half when Tom Akinola (Brampton, Ontario) was able to get a shot attempt in but was unlucky as the ball bounced off the left post.
Tom John (Ahrensburg, Germany) finished the game with two saves on two shot on goal attempt. On the season the Storm defense has been dominante only allowing six goals, and hold their opponents to a .43 scoring average.
The Storm won't have much time to rest as they get set for another face off with Tiffin on Sunday. The 2:30 p.m. match against the Dragons will be the last road contest of the regular season.
