Storm Suffer Heartbreaking Loss In The NCAA Second Round

(GENEVA, Ohio) - The Lake Erie Storm men's soccer season came to a close today with a 2-0 loss to UIndy in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The G-MAC regular-season champion Storm finished the season with a record of 18-3. The 18 wins for Lake Erie are the most all-time in the program. 

The No. 9 Indianapolis Greyhound (14-5-1) advanced to the second round after defeating Fort Hay St. on Thursday. Today the Greyhounds came out aggressive early. In the fifth minute, UIndy was awarded a free kick on the far side of the field. Javier Steinwascher took the free kick and played the ball into the middle of the box. With multiple Storm defenders around the ball, Alejandro Steinwascher was able to get control the ball and assisted Jakub Olczyk with the first goal in the match. 

Lake Erie could not find any open lanes for the offense to start the game. The Storm finished the first half with just two shot attempts, while the Greyhounds put up three attempts. 

The Storm began to pick up the pace and turned up the attack coming out of the halftime break, but UIndy matched Lake Erie's effort. In the 54th minute, Javier Steinwascher took one of the teams three corners for the Greyhounds. Steinwascher sent the corner to Olczyk who headed the ball in for his second goal of the match. 

The UIndy defense was enough to prevent Lake Erie from scoring in the final minutes of the match as the Storm began to gain momentum towards a comeback. Lake Erie finished the game taking a total of seven shots while the Greyhounds attempted eight. Only two of the shots for the Storm were on goal. 

Jonathon Carr led all players with three shot attempts. Lake Erie goalkeeper Tom John finished the game with two saves. 

The historic run by the Storm seniors and the rest of team came to an end with many accomplishments. The 2019 Lake Erie men's soccer team peaked at No. 4 in Division II, the highest ever in program history.
