PAINESVILLE, Ohio (April 22, 2009) - In the final home contests of the season, Lake Erie College lost to Slippery Rock University, 14-5 and 10-2 Wednesday afternoon at Slattery Field.
In game one, Slippery Rock put up big numbers in the early innings with four runs in the first and five in the third in order to go ahead 9-0. Lake Erie scored its first run in the third then got two more runs in each of the two following innings. The Storm had 10 hits in the game - just one less then its guests, however shaky play in the field led to the loss. Playing in the final home doubleheader of her career, senior left fielder Katie Staats (Willoughby, Ohio/South) led the green and white at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance with one RBI. Freshman Haley Rathge (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon) went 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI.
In game two, the Storm scored its only two runs of the game in the second inning on three hits and one error. Rathge, Kristen Robbins (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) and Jamie Wodecki (Northfield, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) all singled to account for three of the team's four total hits for the game.
Lake Erie (5-32) concludes its first year as a NCAA Division II provisional member with a doubleheader on the road against Hillsdale College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
