Storm Splits with Edinboro

PAINESVILLE, Ohio (March 24, 2009) - Lake Erie College split with Edinboro Tuesday afternoon, losing 5-4 and winning in eight innings, 13-12 courtesy of a walk off home run by senior Brittney Binko (Warren, Ohio/John F. Kennedy). The Storm totaled 21 hits on the day, including a season-high 16 in game two.

The first-game battle got off to a shaky start with the visitors plating three runs in the second inning where they kept the lead until the bottom of the third when Lake Erie decided to record its first hit. The Storm's lead off hitter of the inning reached base after being hit by a pitch and two outs later, was sent home on a round tripper by freshman Megan Foley (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick). It was Foley's fifth of the season, in addition to her second in a three-day time frame. The score remained at 3-2 until the seventh inning when Edinboro scored two runs on one hit and an error. The Storm rallied to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh with two hits and two errors. A fly out with two runners on ended the team's chance at the win. Freshman Jamie Wodecki (Northfield, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) went 2-for-2.

In game two, the battle began in much the same manner as it did in the first game. The Fighting Scots put up three runs in the first inning, but the Storm responded with a run in the first and two more in the second. The score stayed tied at three until Edinboro's four-run fourth inning. The lead didn't last long because Lake Erie scored five in the fifth after a six-hit effort that included an RBI double by senior Katie Staats (Willoughby, Ohio/South). Edinboro answered with two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to go up 10-8. In the Storm's final at bat in regulation, a lead off walk followed by a home run by Wodecki tied the game and sent it into extra innings. In the eighth, the Scots went up by two only to be outdone by the Storm which singled to get things started, moving the runner originally placed on second for the tie-breaker rule, over to third. Binko then homered to end the game. It was her first of the season. Of Lake Erie's 16 hits, both Binko and freshman Lindsey Pennell (Columbus, Ohio/Westland) had three and Wodecki, Foley and Staats had two apiece. Freshman Niki Tarter-Fox (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) got her first win of the season after starting the game and going three innings before returning later in the eighth.

Lake Erie (3-18) is at Glenville State on Friday at 3 p.m.
