Storm Strikes First, but Georgian Court Strikes Back at Rebel Games

PAINESVILLE, OHIO – The Lake Erie College softball team jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but could not plate another run after that as Georgian Court University scored six unanswered runs for a 6-1 win on Wednesday morning (March 3) at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
Aided by a couple of miscues, the Storm (0-5) scored an unearned run in the first. Sophomore Lindsey Pennell (Columbus, Ohio/Westland) led off the game with a walk on an illegal pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by pitcher Diana Sansevera. The Storm’s opportunity to add further damage was stuffed  when freshman Chelsey Bleck (Lexington, Ky/Henry Clay) was thrown out at the plate.
After allowing two hits in the opening frame, Sansevera limited Lake Erie to just one more over the final six frames. With her shutting down the Storm, the Lions (5-1) able to eventually generate some offense. Georgian Court scored a run in the third and two in the fourth to first tie the game, then go ahead. The two runs in the fourth were unearned, the result of two LEC fielding errors.
The Lions added another run in the fourth and two more in the seventh, ultimately chasing Storm starter Pam Bykowski (Perry, Ohio/Perry/Armstrong Atlantic).
Bykowski  pitched a decent game in defeat, allowing jut four earned runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. She walked two and struck out a pair. Junior Lauren Malicki (Independence, Ohio/Independence) recorded the final two outs on the mound.
Bleck, sophomore Jamie Wodecki (Northfield, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) and sophomore Haley Rathge (Edon, Ohio/Napoleon) each had a hit for the Storm. Pennell walked twice.
Sammie Garofalo and Courtney Cuevas each had two hits for the Lions.
