Storm Fall to Southern Indiana as Finkler Stays Hot

KISSIMMEE, FLA - Lake Erie College (2-2) was forced to settle for a split for the second day as they fell to the University of Southern Indiana (8-6), 7-2, at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.

The standout performance for the Storm came on the mound in relief, as freshman Dawn Ondercin (Sheffield, Ohio/Brookside) allowed just three unearned runs, all coming on one pitch, in five and one-third innings of work while striking out seven batters.  Ondercin has not allowed an earned run in nine innings of work this season.

Senior outfielder Danielle Finkler (Chardon, Ohio/Berkshire), and junior shortstop Megan Foley (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) each had a pair of hits for the Storm.  Finkler finished the day five-for-five at the plate between the two games.

After quick first innings on both sides, the Eagles struck big first in the top of the second putting four runs on the board on three hits.  In the process, Lake Erie starter senior Lauren Malicki (Independence, Ohio/Independence) was knocked from the contest and replaced by Ondercin.

It appeared Lake Erie might put together a similar inning in the bottom half of the frame, as senior third baseman Brittany Sostre (Parma, Ohio/Valley Forge) singled and junior shortstop Megan Foley (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) doubled to start the frame, but a 1-3-2 double play on a close play that killed the Lake Erie rally.

The Storm put runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings as well, but each time the Eagles worked out of the jam.

In the sixth inning, a two-out error led to Ondercin's first slipup of the afternoon as Southern Indiana capitalized with a three-run home run to go ahead 7-0.

In the seventh inning, the Storm finally got on the board, as Finkler knocked home Foley on a sacrifice fly and junior pinch runner Brittany Athey (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) scampered home while advancing on sophomore Chelsey Bleck's (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) steal.

Lake Erie will be in action all week in Kissimmee at the Rebel Spring Games.
