Lake Erie College softball (8-26, 0-16 GLIAC) was downed in both ends of a doubleheader, 9-0 and 9-2, by Saginaw Valley State University (27-10, 14-4 GLIAC) in Saginaw, Mich Friday.
The first game lasted five innings while the second game went a full seven frames..
In game one, the Cardinals jumped all over Storm freshman Dawn Ondercin (Sheffield, Ohio/Brookside) for six runs in the first and then scored solo runs in each of the next three innings for the victory.
Lake Erie had three hits in the contest, coming from freshmen Juliana Brotzman (Madison, Ohio/Madison) and Jennifer Gratz (Richwood, Ohio/North Union) and junior Lindsey Pennell (Columbus, Ohio/Westland).
In game two, two first inning errors by Lake Erie led to three first inning runs and Saginaw Valley was off and running again. The Storm managed to plate their first run of the day in the third as Pennell singled and was moved around. An inning later, freshman starting pitcher Sara Shields (Randolph, Ohio/Waterloo) swatted a leadoff single and would score on a wild pitch.
However, Saginaw Valley had four home runs in the game and scored in five of the first six innings to secure the win. Pennell and Gratz each had two of the seven Lake Erie hits in the game, all of which were singles.
Lake Erie is scheduled to continue its GLIAC weekend road trip tomorrow at Lake Superior State.
