Lake Erie College (9-33, 1-23 GLIAC) was able to dodge the raindrops, but could not dodge GLIAC-leading Ashland University (27-11, 19-3 GLIAC), falling 13-1 in five innings and 1-0, at Brookside Park in Ashland, Ohio.
Game two was a classic pitching duel between Ashland's Emlyn Knerem and Lake Erie freshman Sara Shields (Randolph, Ohio/Waterloo), with each tossing a complete game. Lake Erie was able to outhit Ashland, 5-4, but the Eagles lone run in the first inning, which was unearned, held up the entire way. Shields allowed the four hits and two walks which striking out a pair.
Lake Erie had a great chance to score in the sixth as three singles loaded the bases with one out, but senior third baseman Brittany Sostre's (Parma, Ohio/Valley Forge) liner to right field was turned into a double play.
After getting shutout in both contests yesterday, Lake Erie scored its lone run in game one when Sostre hit a solo home run. The blast was her 12th of the season and 20th of her career, both Lake Erie records. That run came off Ashland ace Emlyn Knerem, the only run Lake Erie has scored off Knerem in 29.1 innings the past two seasons. Sostre also doubled going two-for-two in the game.
The shorthanded Storm's only other hit came from junior catcher Ali Heming (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) with a fourth inning single. Ashland scored multiple runs in every inning but the third.
Freshman Dawn Ondercin (Sheffield, Ohio/Brookside) got the start for Lake Erie and allowed eight runs in two innings. Junior Sam Ronde (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) worked the final three innings, allowing five runs, but just two earned.
The Storm are back on the road this weekend as they travel to Detroit, Mich. for a four-game set with Wayne State University Friday and Saturday.
