Senior third baseman Brittany Sostre (Parma, Ohio/Valley Forge) showed no signs of slowing up in the final weekend of her career, slugging a pair of home runs but Wayne State University (27-20-1, 15-10-1 GLIAC) powered five home runs of its own en route to a pair of wins over Lake Erie College (9-35, 1-25 GLIAC) in Detroit, Mich.
The Warriors took game one, 11-3, in six innings and finished the sweep, 13-2, in five innings.
Sostre extended her Lake Erie single season home run record to 14 with the pair of long balls and also holds the career record with 22. The 14 bombs place her third among GLIAC leaders.
The Storm got off to a strong start in game one as freshman first baseman Jennifer Gratz (Richmond, Ohio/North Union) singled to center and freshman Juliana Brotzman (Madison, Ohio/Madison) reached on an error to set up a three-run blast from Sostre. The Storm would not get another hit until Brotzman singled in the sixth inning while Wayne State quickly gained the lead with a five-run first inning and was off and running.
Freshman Dawn Ondercin (Sheffield, Ohio/Brookside) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs in 3.1 innings.
In game two, freshman starter Sara Shields (Randolph, Ohio/Waterloo) was solid through two innings allowing just a solo run, but was tagged for six of the eight runs Wayne State scored in the third, breaking the game wide open. Lake Erie had seven hits in the game, each coming from a different player, but did not find the board until the fifth inning when Sostre's two-run shot knocked in Brotzman.
The Storm wraps up their four-game set in Detroit with two more games against the Warriors tomorrow starting at 1:00 p.m.
