Softball's Heming Named First Team Academic All-District

PAINESVILLE, OHIO - Junior catcher Ali Heming (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) was named to the Capital One Academic All-District IV first team in the College Division as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  As a first team selection, Heming is now eligible for the national Academic All-America ballot which will be announced in late-May.

Each of the six college division districts, comprised of NCAA Division II, III and NAIA schools has a squad of 11 players, with just one catcher, named to a first, second or third team based on academic and athletic accomplishments.  Click here to view the full release from CoSIDA.

Heming has been a part or full-time starter for Lake Erie at catcher each of the last three seasons making 81 career starts.  This season, the junior batted .192 in 33 games with four RBIs, nine walks, and a strong .967 fielding percentage. 

In the classroom, Heming boasts a 3.90 GPA as a mathematics major and plans to attend graduate school to become a college professor of mathematics.  She is currently a teaching assistant in the math department and intends to refine algorithm to compute the digits of pi as senior project.

Heming is also extremely involved on the Lake Erie campus, as she was recently named president of the Lake Erie Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.  She has also started a started gay-straight and LGBT organization (Skittles) and serves as a tutor, orientation leader, resident assistant and student government representative. 

Four GLIAC players, including Heming, received the first-team academic honor in softball.  Heming becomes the second Lake Erie athlete this season to receive a first team academic all-district honor, joining sophomore Taylor Yurick (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) of women's soccer and is the first player in recorded Lake Erie softball history to receive such an award.
