Lake Superior State Lakers Sweep Storm

PAINESVILLE, Ohio—The am were unable Lake Erie College softball to capture a win in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate doubelheader Saturday (April 6), falling to Lake Superior State University 10-2 and 8-0.

In game one, Lake Superior (7-8, 5-7 GLIAC) got on the board first in the bottom of the second when Brandi Anderson's double knocked in two runs. The Lakers bats lit up in the top of the third, starting with a lead-off homerun Amanda Maxon homer to left center. Heather Cuthrill scored on a sacrifice fly by Valerie Carlson. A Haleigh Edgar single to centerfield scored two more runs as the Lakers took a 6-0 lead. 

After Lake Superior added four more runs over the fourth and fifth inning to pull ahead 10-0, the Storm (2-20, 0-12 GLIAC) rallied in the bottom of the fifth. Olivia Gilmour (Garfield, Ohio/Troy) led off the inning with a triple followed by a Maddi Klemp (Akron, Ohio/Coventry) single. A Mackenzie Quinn (Ypsilanti, Mich./Milan) single scored the two baserunners but the Storm was unable to produce any more runs. 

Gilmour's triple led the Storm offense while Quinn recorded two RBI. Chelsey Bleck (Lexington,) Ky./Henry Clay and Jeniffer Gratz (Richwood, Ohio/North Union) also recorded hits for Lake Erie. 

Kirsten Thompson led the Lakers with three RBI and three runs. Brandi Anderson picked up the win on the mound, allowing four hits over five innings. 

In game two, the Lakers' pitcher Felicia Gingrich held the Storm scoreless, allowing only five hits as Lake Superior took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and did not look back. Maxon had two runs on two hits for the Lakers while Thompson had three RBI. 

Klemp, Gratz, Meredith Scholle (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills), Morgan Studd (Wakeman, Ohio/Wakeman Reserve) and Courtney Hawk (New Lebanon, Ohio/Dixie) recorded hits for the Storm. 

The Storm wraps-up an eight-game homestand Sunday (April 7) when they play host to Northwood University.
