SERIES PREVIEW: Lake Erie to travel to Lima for games against upstart Racers

Lake Erie heads to Lima, Ohio, for the team's first non-conference affair since March 11. The Storm will tangle with the Northwestern Ohio Lady Racers, an NAIA program and a member of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.

The Tuesday twin bill sets up as a respite for two teams struggling in conference play. UNO is 1-15 in WHAC games (and 10-17 overall). The 4-29 Storm are 1-21 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games. Lake Erie has lost 11 consecutive games. On the season, the Green & White are 2-6 in road games.

Northwestern Ohio is a start-up program – the 2014 season is the Lady Racers' inaugural campaign.

MATCH-UP NUMBERS: Northwestern Ohio is averaging 4.4 runs per game, while giving up 5.3. The Lady Racers own a .315/.354/.410 batting line (average/on-base/slugging) and an ERA of 4.52. They have registered a more-than-respectable .956 fielding percentage in their inaugural season. … LEC is averaging 2.9 RPG while yielding 8.2. The Storm have thus far batted .271/.326/.373. They own a 7.56 ERA and a fielding mark of .925.

SLUMPING BATS & GLOVES: Lake Erie's offense has been much improved overall in 2014, but over their last 10 games, the Green & White are hitting just .243/.306/.336 and producing only 2.1 RPG. That slump has carried over in the field as well – the Storm committed nine errors on Sunday, 13 over their four-game weekend set and have saddled pitchers with an .890 fielding percentage since April 9.

SERIES STARS: Freshmen Hannah Shevenell and Elizabeth Karako and seniors Hannah Francis and Maddi Klemp had big numbers in Lake Erie's four home games on Friday and Saturday. Shevenell batted .400 (4-of-10) and notched a 4.34 ERA in the circle. Karako had a 1.200 OPS (on-base plus slugging) and a pair of RBIs. Francis registered a .583 OBP, reaching base seven times in four games. Klemp batted .333 (3-for-9).  

ROAD WARRIORS:  In eight road games this season, Lake Erie is batting .309/.351/.435 and averaging 3.9 RPG. Jeniffer Gratz (1.096 OPS), Maddi Klemp (.400 OBP), Hannah Francis (.935 OPS) and Darrian Yanek (.632 SLG) have been LEC's top batters in away games.

RAGING ON: Jeniffer Gratz has hit safely in eight straight games; that's the longest hit streak for Storm Softball since 2010. No player has had a double-digit streak since Jessica Hedrick (10 games) and Katie Puda (13) accomplished that feat in 2008. … Lake Erie is 3-6 this season when scoring first and 1-23 when its opponent scores first. … Lake Erie is 1-5 in games decided by one run. The second inning has been a rough one on the Storm. The Green & White have been outscored, 57-4, in the second.
