Storm Splits Against Lake Superior St.

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College softball team split their double header action today (April 24th) against Lake Superior St.  With the split the Storm is 12-24 overall and 6-18 in the conference, and the Lakers are 12-25 overall and 5-18 in conference play. 

In game one, the Storm took an early lead in the top of the second when Kaylie Lewis (Sebring, Ohio / West Branch) grounded out and drove in Elizabeth Karako(Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic), to make the score 1-0.  The Lakers answered back with three runs in the second, to take a 3-1 advantage.  The Storm responded in third inning when L. Karako reached on a fielder's choice and scored Jessacca Gironda (Kent State).  The Lakers scored three runs in the fifth to make the score 6-2, and Lake Superior St. held on to win.    

In game two, Lake Erie took a 2-0 lead in the fourth, when Marissa Rizzo (Northfield Center, Ohio / Nordonia) reached on an error and drove in Lewis. Later in the inning Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) was driven in by a Jennifer Doershuk (Streesboro, Ohio / Kent Roosevelt) single.  The Storm added a run in the sixth when Doershuk doubled to right center to drive in Arial Birtley (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor), to make the score 3-0. Later in the inning Lindsey Valvoda (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) singled and drove home Doershuk.  Gironda tripled to the left field gap and scored both Darrian Yanek (Youngstown, Ohio / South Range) and Valvoda, to make the score 6-0, in favor of the Storm.     

Dawn Ondercin (Sheffield, Ohio / Brookside) started game two and pitched 4 inning of shutout softball.  Katarina Davis (Independence, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) came in to relieve Ondercin for the Storm and pitched three innings of scoreless softball to finish the shutout for the Storm.  Combined the pair of Ondercin and Davis allowed seven hits, and each had three strikeouts in the game.   

Lake Erie will be back in action tomorrow (April 25th) when they travel to take on Northwood, with the first game of the double header starting at 1 P.M.
