Storm Sweeps Day One Double Header

CLERMONT, Fla.-  The Lake Erie College softball team opened their season with a pair of wins over Lourdes University (15-7) and Point Park University (6-2).  

The Storm opened the first game with a run in the first inning, as both Arial Birtley (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) and Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) both singled.  Birtley scored when Allyson Hajnosz (Lordstown, Ohio / Lordstown) double down the left field line to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Storm.  The Storm added to the lead in the second when Birtley doubled and drove in Marissa Rizzo (Northfield Center, Ohio / Nordonia).  S. Karako hit a double into the left field gap to drive in and Kate-Lynn Urgo (Vermillion, Ohio / Vermillion), and Birtley to make the score 4-0.  Later in the second, the Storm loaded the bases after both Hajnosz and Elizabeth Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) walked.  Hannah Shevenell (Madera, Calif. / Liberty) singled to drive in S. Karako and Lindsey Valvoda (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) walked in Hajnosz to give the Storm a 6-0 lead.  Rizzo cleared the bases with a triple and gave the Storm a 9-0 lead in the top of the second inning.  The Grey Wolves responded with two runs in the bottom of the second, to make the score 9-2.  Nicole Grimmett (Geneva, Ohio / Geneva) ripped a two run homerun to left center and gave the Storm an 11-2 lead in the fourth.  Later in the inning Hajnosz singled and drove home Birtley, Rizzo, and Valvoda, to make the score, 14-2.     The Grey Wolves answered in the bottom of the fourth with four runs to make the score, 14-6.  The Storm bats stayed hot as the scored again in the fifth when Rizzo singled up the middle to score Shevenell to make the score 15-6.  The Storm held on to win in the bottom of the fifth, 15-7.

In game two the Storm jumped out to an early 2-0 when Urgo doubled to left center field to drive in both Rizzo and Jennifer Doershuk (Streesboro, Ohio / Kent Roosevelt).  In the top of the third after a S. Karako single, Hajnosz doubled off of the left field fence to drive in S. Karkao, and gave the Storm a 3-0 lead.  Doershuk added to the Storm lead with a solo home run in the fourth.  The Pioneers cut into the Storm lead with a two run homerun in the fifth.  In the top of the sixth the Storm loaded the bases and Birtley walked in a run.  S. Karako singled through the left side to drive in Rizzo, and made the score 6-2 in favor of the Storm.  The Storm held the Pioneers scoreless through the final two innings and won the game 6-2. 

On the mound for the Storm was Allyson Deemer (Poland, Ohio / Poland Seminary) as she started the first game and pitched in a relief effort in game two.  Combined Deemer pitched five innings, she struck out five while only giving up one walk.  Shevenell started game two, and pitched five innings of six hit, two run softball.  Shevenell struck  out three batters.

Lake Erie will be back in action tomorrow as they play Seton Hill and Wheeling Jesuit at 9 A.M. and 11 A.M. respectively.
