Storm Defeated by Cardinals in GLIAC Opener

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Lake Erie College softball team was in action today as they were defeated by the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals in a GLIAC doubleheader.

The Cardinals won game one 4-0 and then took the second game by an 8-3 final score.

The Cardinals jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  After a scoreless second inning Saginaw Valley tacked on a run in the third and took a 4-0 lead.  The Storm threatened in the top of the sixth when Kristin Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood) and Marissa Rizzo (Northfield Center, Ohio / Nordonia) led off the inning with back to back singles, but the Storm could not bring them around to score.  The Cardinals held on to win the game, 4-0.

In game two, the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the second as the scratched across a run in the top of the second inning.  Saginaw Valley added three runs in the third to take a 4-0 lead. The Storm cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Kr. Peacock walked with two outs in the inning. Rizzo reached on a bunt single to the pitcher. The pitcher made a throwing error, allowing Peacock to score and Rizzo to move to second. Sav Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) singled home Rizzo to pull the Storm within 4-2. The Cardinals pushed the lead to 8-2 with a four spot in the fifth inning. Lake Erie scratched a run across the plate in the seventh inning. Nicole Grimmett (Geneva, Ohio / Geneva) led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a Kaitlin Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood) double. Rizzo drove in Grimmett with an infield single. The Storm fell 8-3 in the nightcap.

Rizzo went three-for-four in the second game and finished with four hits for the day. S. Karako and Grimmett each had two hits in the last game of the doubleheader. Kaylie Lewis (Sebring, Ohio / West Branch) threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief for game two.

Lake Erie will return to the field Saturday (March 25) when they travel to take on Northwood with the first game of the double header set to start at 11 a.m.
