CLERMONT, Fl. – The Lake Erie College softball team was in action today as they were defeated by both Gannon and Cleary in their double header.
In game one the Storm jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. Payton Brownlee (Newark, Ohio / Granville) led off the game with a single through the left side. Later in the inning Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) singled down the left field line and advanced Brownlee to third. The next batter up Allyson Hajnosz (Lordstown, Ohio / Lordstown) reached on an error, and drove in Brownlee to give the Storm a 1-0 lead. After a scoreless second inning, Gannon took the lead with a two run third inning. Lake Erie tied the game in the top of the seventh as they opened the inning with back to back bunt singles by Brownlee and Marissa Rizzo (Northfield Center, Ohio / Nordonia). The next batter S. Karako singled through the right side and plated Brownlee to tie the game at 2-2. Gannon won the game on a walk off double, 3-2. Allyson Deemer (Poland, Ohio / Poland Seminary) was in the circle in game one as she pitched a complete game. She allowed two earned runs on seven hits, while she struck out three.
Game two started with a five run first inning from the Cougars. The Storm battled back in the bottom of the third as Brownlee and Rizzo led off the inning with singles. S. Karako grounded out to shortstop, but Brownlee was able to score and Rizzo advanced to third. The next batter up Hajnosz hit a sacrifice fly to right field and drove in Rizzo, to make the score 5-2 at the end of the third inning. The Storm continued to rally in the fourth when Jennifer Doershuk (Streesboro, Ohio / Kent Roosevelt) doubled to left center to score Kristin Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood) who singled earlier in the inning. Later in the inning Arial Birtley (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) grounded out to second, and drove in Alyssa Johnson (Wickliffe, Ohio / Wickliffe) who pitch ran for Doershuk. After a scoreless fifth and sixth inning, Cleary tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, and led 7-4. The Cougars were able to hold on and win, 7-4. Ashley Brown (Dayton, Ohio / Carlisle) pitched in a relief effort in game two as she pitched a solid 6.2 innings. She allowed two runs on seven hits, and she had two strikeouts.
Lake Erie will return to the diamond Tuesday (Feb. 27) when they play Gannon and Dominican, with first pitch scheduled for 9 and 11:30 a.m. respectively.
