CLERMONT, Fl. – The Lake Erie College softball team was in action today as they spilt their double header action. The Storm fell to Davenport in game one and defeated Nyack in game two.
Game one started with a scoreless first and second inning before the Storm scored twice in the third. Payton Brownlee (Newark, Ohio / Granville) got the inning started with a bunt single, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chloe Allen (Lebanon, Ohio / Lebanon). Brownlee scored on a passed ball during a Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) walk. The next batter up Allyson Hajnosz (Lordstown, Ohio / Lordstown) tripled to the right centerfield gap and plated S. Karako from first, to give Lake Erie a 2-0 advantage. After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning the Storm added to their lead with a run in the sixth inning. Hajnosz led off the inning with a single to left field. The next Jennifer Doershuk (Streesboro, Ohio / Kent Roosevelt) doubled to the right center gap and plated Hajnosz to give the Storm a 3-0 edge. Davenport answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth, and trailed Lake Erie 3-1. Davenport tacked on three runs in the bottom of the seventh and won, 4-3.
Nyack jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Storm tied the game in the bottom of the first as Payton Brownlee led off with a walk. Brownlee then stole second and third and scored on an over throw from the catcher. After three scoreless innings the Warriors added a run in the top of the fifth and took a 2-1 lead. The Storm answered back in the bottom of the fifth when S. Karako singled to lead off the inning. The next batter up Hajnosz hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in S. Karako. The Storm broke the game open with a five run sixth inning. The inning started with back to back singles from Ashley Brown (Dayton, Ohio / Carlisle) and Alyssa Johnson (Wickliffe, Ohio / Wickliffe). The next batter up Brownlee walked to load the bases. Chloe Allen (Lebanon, Ohio / Lebanon) reached on an error and plated Skylar Acuna (Redlands, Calif. / Redlands) who pinch ran for Brown. The next batter up S, Karako singled home Arial Birtley (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) who pinch ran for Johnson, and the next batter Hajnosz reached on a fielder's choice. The next batter Doershuk doubled to the right centerfield gap and cleared the bases as all three runs scored, to give the Storm a 7-2 lead. Brown pitched a scoreless seventh and the Storm won, 7-2.
Lake Erie will be back on the diamond tomorrow (March 2) when they wrap up their Florida trip against Northern State and Missouri St. Louis, with first pitch set for 9 and 11:30 a.m. respectively.
