Storm Splits With Fighting Scots

VIENNA, W. Va. – The Lake Erie College softball team split a doubleheader on the road against the Ohio Valley University Fighting Scots on Friday (April 13).

Ohio Valley won the opener 4-2 and the Storm won the nightcap 8-2.


The Fighting Scots plated two runs in each of the first two innings as they held a 4-0 lead.

Lake Erie cut the lead in half in the sixth inning with two runs scored on five hits. Allyson Hajnosz (Lordstown, Ohio / Lordstown) opened the inning with a double before she scored on a RBI single by Taylor Phillips (Ontario, Canada / John F. Ross). A single moved Phillips to second and Kristin Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood) drove her home with a RBI single. Lake Erie loaded the bases but could not pull any closer.

Marissa Rizzo (Northfield Center, Ohio / Nordonia) and Phillips each had two hits in game one as Lake Erie piled up ten hits.


Lake Erie scored three runs in both the first and second innings, opening a 6-0 lead over Ohio Valley. In the first inning, Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) reached on an error and Jennifer Doershuk (Streetsboro, Ohio / Kent Roosevelt) singled before Phillips hit a three-run homerun.

The Storm loaded the bases in the second inning with a walk, single and a hit by pitch. A wild pitch scored one run before Karako walked to load the bases again. Doershuk singled home two runs as Lake Erie pushed the lead to 6-0.

Ohio Valley pushed two runs across in the bottom of the second as they trailed 6-2.

In the fourth inning, Karako doubled with two outs and then Hajnosz followed with a double of her own, scoring Karako from second base.

Lake Erie closed out the scoring in the seventh inning. Doershuk was hit by a pitch with one out and Ashley Brown (Dayton, Ohio / Carlisle) singled. Alyssa Johnson (Wickliffe, Ohio / Wickliffe) singled home Doershuk as Lake Erie led 8-2.

Doershuk had two hits in the second game while she reached base three times with two RBI.

Brown went the distance with seven innings of two-run ball. Both runs were unearned as she gave up six hits and struck out five batters.

Lake Erie will host Hillsdale on Tuesday (April 17), with a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM.
