Postwaite With a Pair of Records, NCAA Provo Leap in Storm's 2012 Debut

GENEVA, OHIO – Freshman jumper Joe Postwaite (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chilli) capped a record day with a provisional qualifying leap and two women set school records as the Lake Erie College track and field teams returned to action on Saturday (Jan. 21) at the SPIRE North Coast Indoor Track & Field Open in Geneva.

The meet, which featured 10 Division II and III squads, was unscored.

After setting a school record in the long jump by clearing 22' 2 ½" and placing second early in the meet, Postwaite set his attention towards the triple jump.  He reached 45' 8" on his third jump for a new school mark and then subsequently bested that distance on his final two jumps of the day. His final jump reached 47' 2 ½", or 14.39 meters, which cleared the NCAA Division II indoor provisional mark of 14.30.  His jump is also currently tied for 12th best in the country.

Postwaite easily won the triple jump as the second place finisher did not clear 45'.

Two other records fell on the women's side with junior Samantha Smith (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) running 2:22.91 in the 800-meters and sophomore Shanita Fluker (Flint, Mich./Southwest) finishing the 400-meter dash in 1:01.41.  Smith placed sixth in her event while Fluker took home fifth-place.

In addition to Postwaite in the triple jump, the Storm's other first place finish came in the men's 60-meter hurdles. Junior All-American Isaac Snyder (Salesville, Ohio/Buckeye Trail), who has already provisionally qualified for the national meet in the heptathlon, won that event in 8.53 seconds.

Classmate Eric Klucar (Medina, Ohio/Highland) was second in the pole vault, going over the bar at 14' 5 ¼" on his final attempt.

The Storm is back in action next weekend, Jan. 27-28, hosting the SPIRE Midwest Open at SPIRE Institute in Geneva.
