GENEVA, OHIO -- Only two school records fell Saturday (Jan. 28), but the Lake Erie College Track and Field teams still had a successful weekend with 10 top-10 finishes at the SPIRE Midwest Collegiate Open at SPIRE Institute in Geneva.
The unscored meet featured nearly 20 schools, including three Division I teams.
Junior Samantha Smith (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) ran a school-best 1:39.75 in the 600-meters to place third in the event, setting a school record for the second week in a row. Last week she set a new mark in the 800-meters at the SPIRE North Coast Open. Sophomore Shanita Fluker (Flint, Mich./Southwest) was close behind Smith, finishing sixth in the 600-meters with a time of 1:41.36.
The other school record was set in the triple jump as freshman Brandy Nortum (Tarentum, Pa./Highlands) took seventh in the event at 34' 5" – six inches better than her previous best jump, which was the old school mark.
In addition to the mid-distance duo and Nortum, freshman Destiny Prusky (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) finished fourth in the high jump, clearing 5' 3" and sophomore Taylor Williams (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) was sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 46' 10 ½". The 4x400-meter relay team placed eighth with a time of 4:07.35.
On the men's side, freshman jumper Joe Postwaite (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chilli) continued to dominate the field. He won the triple jump at 46' 11 ¾" and came in third in the long jump, leaping 21' 9". This came a week after setting school records in both events and reaching NCAA provisional qualifying in the triple jump last weekend.
Two other men posted individual top-10 finishes. Junior national qualifier Eric Klucar (Medina, Ohio/Highland) placed eighth in the pole vault, clearing 14' 5 ¼" and freshman Dakoda Walker (Erie, Pa./McDowell) took ninth in the 60-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 7.33 seconds.
The Storm will be at home for the third straight week on Saturday, Feb. 5, when they host the Division II Team Challenge for the first time at SPIRE Institute.
