PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Competing in just three events, the jumpers from the Lake Erie College track and field teams made their mark Friday night (Feb. 17) at the University of Akron Zips Invitational with two first place finishes, one second and, most importantly, one automatic national meet qualifying mark.
The feat belonged to sophomore All-American Jamil Dudley (Massillon, Ohio/Massillon). One night after scoring a career-high 24 points for the Storm men's basketball team in a home win over Northern Michigan University, the two-sport stand-out made his season debut on the track and punched his ticket to the NCAA Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championships. His final attempt cleared 7' ½" (2.15 meters) to win the event and send him to the national meet for the second straight year.
Freshman Joe Postwaite (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) won the men's triple jump event, again surpassing the provisional qualifying mark for the fifth time this season, but coming up just short of automatic qualifying. He jumped 48' ½" (14.64 meters), tied for his second-best mark of the year. He jumped four-and-one-half feet further than the runner up in the event.
On the women's side, junior Colleen Bednar (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) finished second in the long jump with a season-best 17' 9 ½" (5.42 meters).
Additionally, assistant coach Trevor Matuszak competed in the open men's weight throw, winning the event with a toss of 64' 7" (19.68 meters).
The full Lake Erie squad is in action on Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Kent State University Tune-Up.
