ALLENDALE, MICH. – In their final meet of the 2012 calendar year, the Lake Erie College track and field teams continued their strong early season performance Friday night (Dec. 14) at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open. The Storm set six school records and hit three NCAA Championship provisional qualifying marks.
There were three records set on the men's side and three by the women's team. Two of the provisional marks came in jumps while the other came on the track.
Freshman Alicia Arnold (Lorain, Ohio/Lorain) took first place in the women's 200-meter dash, setting a school-record with an NCAA provisional time of 24.89 seconds. This comes one week after hitting provisional qualifying in the 60-meters at Kent State University.
Defending national outdoor high jump champion Jamil Dudley (Massillon, Ohio/Massillon) made his season debut in winning the event and hitting the NCAA indoor provisional mark, clearing the bar at 6' 8 ¼". Sophomore Joe Postwaite (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili) hit provisional qualifying in the triple jump at 47' 6 ½". That placed him second in the event. He also finished second in the long jump at 21' 10 ¼".
Junior All-American Ethan Snyder (Salesville, Ohio/Buckeye Trail) bested the 800-meter record by three seconds with a time of 1:54.29, placing him fifth in the event. He also took third in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.47 seconds.
Shanita Fluker (Flint, Mich./Flint Southwestern) placed second in the women's 600-meters, with a school-record time of 1:39.37. Sophomore Destiny Prusky (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) had an LEC record jump in the high jump, for the second straight week, of 5' 5 ¼", placing fourth.
Freshman Nick Hall (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) ran the fastest mile in Lake Erie history, clocking in at 4:20.25 while redshirt freshman Sean Stone (Newton Falls, Ohio/Southeast) set a school mark in the weight throw with a toss of 49' 1 ½".
Classmate Jarrod Edwards (Riverview, Fla./Riverview) just missed provisional qualifying in the 60-meter dash, finishing third with a time of 6.96 seconds, just .01 off the NCAA mark. Freshman Keith Hemphill (Warrensville Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Central Catholic) took third in the 400-meters at 49.22 while the men's 4x400-meter relay team took second in a season-best time of 3:19.48.
Sophomore Arianna Jorgensen (Kleinburg, Ontario / Emily Carr Secondary) took second in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.12 seconds and was seventh in the 200-meters at 26.29 seconds. The Storm women had two runners place in the top six in the 60 meters in freshman Danielle Martin (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport), who was fourth at 7.93 seconds, and senior Colleen Bednar (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) in sixth at 8.05 seconds.
Freshman Kaitlyn Menges (New Philadelphia, Ohio/New Philadelphia) placed fourth in the shot put and seventh in the weight throw while Bednar was sixth in the high jump. The women's 4x400-meter relay team took third in 4:07.18.
The Storm are off through the rest of the month and resume competition in 2013 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Blazer Invitational Jan. 10-11.
