Track & Field Teams Open 2013 With NCAA Site Preview at UAB Blazer Invite

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – The Lake Erie College track and field teams opened the 2013 portion of their schedule Thursday and Friday (Jan. 10-11) at the Blazer Invitational hosted by the University of Alabama Birmingham.

The event also provided the Storm a preview of the host site of the 2013 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in early March as the meet was held at the Crossplex Complex in Birmingham. 

The Storm men had one provisional qualifying performance and one school record while picking up six top-10 finishes at the meet.

Sophomore Joe Postwaite (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili), who had already provisionally qualified in the triple jump, strengthened his position with a season best 48' 3 ¼", placing him third in the competition and currently sixth overall nationally.

Redshirt freshman Sean Stone (Newton Falls, Ohio/Southeast) posted a school-record toss of 51' 7 ¼" in the weight throw and finished eighth in the event. 

The Storm's top finisher was junior Jimmy Hudd (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/Ashland) who was third in the 5,000-meter run with a personal best time of 16:10.72. 

Postwaite also had a ninth-place finish in the long jump (21' 7 ½"), the same place finish as the 4x400-meter relay tea, (3:22.79).  Freshman Keith Hemphill (Warrensville Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Central Catholic) took 10th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.75 seconds.

The only top-10 finish for the women was by sophomore Destiny Prusky (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) in the high jump. She was part of a seven-way tie for fifth place with a jump of 5'3 ".  Freshman Alicia Arnold (Lorain, Ohio/Lorain) took 12th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.17 seconds and junior Shanita Fluker (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) was 17th in the 800-meters (2:25.95).

The teams are idle until taking part in the annual DII Team Challenge event at SPIRE Institute Feb. 1-2.
