TIFFIN, Ohio – The Lake Erie College track and field team was in action today as they opened their 2017-18 indoor season at the Tiffin Alumni Open.
The Storm women were led by Hailey Vanhoy (Geneva, Ohio / Geneva) as she earned first place honors in the women's mile with a time of 5:59.71 minutes. Vanhoy was closely followed by teammate Gina Henley (Akron, New York / Akron HS) as she took second place in the women's mile, with a time of 6:02.30 minutes. Henley also took second place in the women's 3,000 meters as she crossed the line in a time of 11:40.30 minutes. Catherine Beisel (Geneva, Ohio / Geneva) was right on Henley's heels as she placed third in the 3,000 meters with a time of 11:40.32 minutes. Luca Hartman (Bonnievale, South Africa / Hcei Meisieskod Bloemhof) placed seventh in the women's 200 meter dash, as she crossed the finish line in a time of 27.43 seconds.
The Storm men were led by their performance in the 400 meter dash, as Lake Erie accounted for the top three spots. Joseph Elson (Mount Gilead, Ohio / Mount Gilead) took first place, as he broke the tape in a time of 50.93 seconds. Montrell Devaughn (Canton, Ohio / Canton McKinely) took second place in the 400 in a time of 51.37 seconds. Brian Raven (Sugar Land, Texas / William B. Travis) took third place for Lake Erie in the 400 meters, as he crossed the line in a time of 51.48 seconds. Xavier Kibet (Nakuru, Kenya / Baringo) earned first place honors in the men's 3,000 meters, as he broke the tape with a time of 9:23.84 minutes. Kibet also placed fourth in the mile with a time of 4:42 minutes. Brandon Bryan (Geneva, Ohio / Geneva) added a fourth place finish for Lake Erie in the 3,000 meters as he finished with a time of 9:50.49 minutes.
Evan Loughman (Sheridan, Ohio / Sheridan) represented the Storm men in the shot put, as he earned a second place finish, clearing distance of 14.38 meters. The mark by Loughman is a career best.
Interim Head Coach Matt Stuck said, "Overall it was a very good meet for us considering we are fighting off some colds right now along with the academic stress of an upcoming finals week."
Lake Erie will return to the track Saturday (Jan. 12) when they travel to compete at Findlay.
