Henley Sets Record at Midwest Open

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College track and field team was in action today as they finished up their competition at the Midwest Open at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio. 

Head Coach Giles Davis said, ""​Overall I appreciate and applaud the competitiveness of the entire team today which reflected in personal best efforts in the throws, sprints, and distance events. ​We have a few more weeks until the conference championships, but the coaching staff likes the direction of the team, and the focus of the athletes competing."

The Storm women were led by Gina Henley (Akron, New York / Akron HS) as she broke the school record in the 5,000 meters.  Henley broke the record with a time of 19:42.15 minutes, on Friday night.  Luca Hartman (Bonnievale, South Africa / Hcei Meisieskod Bloemhof) added a solid performance in the 200 meter dash as she crossed the line in a time of 26.57 seconds.  Hailey Vanhoy (Geneva, Ohio / Geneva) added a strong race in the women's 800 meters as she finished in a time of 2:35.01 minutes.    

The men were led by their performance in the 600 meter dash as Joseph Elson (Mount Gilead, Ohio / Mount Gilead) and Montrell Devaughn (Canton, Ohio / Canton McKinely) occupied the second and fifth spots respectively.  Elson finished with a time of 1:22.23 minutes and Devaughn finished in a time of 1:24.06 minutes.  Brandon Bryan (Geneva, Ohio / Geneva) added a first place finish in his heat of the men's mile, as he broke the tape in a time of 4:35.75 minutes. 

Lake Erie will be back in action Saturday (Feb. 2) when they travel to compete in the Youngstown State National Invite.
