PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Lake Erie women's basketball team opened its season with an 80-65 loss to Wheeling Jesuit in the WJU's Tip-Off Classic in West Virginia Sunday (Nov. 15) night.
The Storm (0-1) struggled from the field in the first half, connecting on just 26 percent of its shots, while shooting 62 percent from the line in the game.
Wheeling Jesuit was able to open up a 44-24 lead heading into halftime.
"Our inability to put the ball in the basket in the first half hurt us," Lake Erie head coach Bob Booher said. "We shot better in the second half and it made all the difference in the world." Lake Erie hit 48 percent of its shots in the second half, while out-scoring the Cardinals by five in the final 20 minutes.
Sophomore forward Jen Caiola (South Russell, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) paced the Storm with 16 points on 5-for-9 shooting.
Junior forward Alyssa Wagers (Stow, Ohio/Stow) added 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals, while freshman guard Sarah Wojciechowski (Randolph, Ohio/Waterloo) chipped in 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting in 22 minutes off the bench.
The Storm will finish its Wheeling trip on Monday evening with a 5 p.m. tip against West Liberty State.
