PAINESVILLE, OHIO - Two weeks ago, the Lake Erie College women's basketball team dealt Mansfield University a 35-point defeat in Painesville. On Friday night (Dec. 11), the Storm took it to Mansfield again, this time on the Mountaineers' home court, leading wire-to-wire in a 83-38 rout at the Mansfield Comfort Inn Classic.
The win was the third straight for Lake Erie (6-4), which is off to the best start in the program's 30-year history. The three consecutive wins have all been by at least 30 points and Lake Erie's last four victories have been by an average of 39.8 points.
Senior Renese Ames (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford) led three players in double figures with a game-high 18 points off the bench along with five assists. Junior guard Brittany Zele (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) added 14 points and freshman Sarah Wojciechowski (Randolph, Ohio/Waterloo) chipped in with 10. Two others scored nine points as the Storm hit the 80-point mark for the third straight game.
Lake Erie's defensive numbers were just as impressive as the scoring totals. The Storm allowed a season-low 38 points and held the Mounties (2-5) to just 31.9 percent shooting in the game, including just three-of-21 from three-point range.
"I thought we did a tremendous job defensively tonight," said head coach Bob Booher. "Britt Busson had a phenomenal game, holding their best player to just eight points and Stephanie Rogers was a presence inside deflecting passes and either blocking or altering several shots."
The Storm forced 22 turnovers while committing just eight on the offensive end. That was the lowest number of turnovers ever by a Storm team. Lake Erie also allowed the Mountaineers just eight offensive rebounds.
"When you don't turn it over and limit the other team's second-chances, you'll be tough to beat," said Booher. "Plus, we shot nearly 50 percent which has been key for us lately. When we have shot the ball well, we've won."
Lake Erie went 32-of-66 (48.5%) from the field, hitting eight three-pointers. The Storm outrebounded Mansfield 41-31 with junior Alyssa Wagers (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Busson (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) handed out a career-high eight assists and Rogers (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) finished with nine points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Mallory Moore led Mansfield with nine points and eight rebounds.
The Storm will play Slippery Rock University on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the third game of the Comfort Inn Classic.
