Wagers' Double-Double Not Enough as Storm Falls at D-I Akron, 76-51

AKRON, OHIO - In the Lake Erie College women's basketball team's first game against a Division I opponent, junior Alyssa Wagers (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) recorded a double-double and three players scored in double figures but the Storm didn't have enough to hang with the University of Akron in an 76-51 loss Monday night (Dec. 11) in Akron.

The Storm (7-5), which saw its four-game winning streak come to an end, shot just 27 percent overall and committed a season-high 28 turnovers.

Lake Erie led early, 6-4, after a pair of free throws by junior Wagers, but the Zips responded with a 9-0 run to take a seven-point lead. Lake Erie managed to cut the deficit to three twice, the last time on a Brittany Zele (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) three-pointer that made the score 20-17.

After that point, it was all Zips (5-4). The Storm's solid start was followed by costly turnovers and cold shooting as Akron closed out the half on a 26-9 run to lead 46-26 at the break. Lake Erie made just nine-of-31 shots (29 percent) in the first half and committed 15 turnovers. The Storm had committed a total of 16 turnovers in its previous two games combined.

In the second half, Lake Erie got as close as 15 points, 61-46, but turnovers on the next four possessions were all answered by Akron baskets and the Zips again pushed the lead back over the 20-point mark.

Wagers finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the year and second straight. But her effort was overshadowed by Akron's Rachel Tecca who led all players with 20 points and 18 rebounds, including 13 boards in the first half.

Zele led the Storm with 13 points and freshman Sarah Wojciechowski (Randolph, Ohio/Waterloo) added 10 points off the bench.

Sophomore center Stephanie Rogers (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) finished with eight points and blocked a career-high-tying five shots for the second game in a row.

Zele and Wagers combined to go 10-of-17 from the floor, but the rest of the team was just seven-of-56. Senior Renese Ames (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford) and sophomore Jen Caiola (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls), who combined to score 43 points last game, were a combined one-of-24 shooting.

Kara Murphy (14 points) and Amber Witt (13) also scored in double figures for the Zips.

The Storm returns home Thursday night, Dec. 17, for a 5:30 p.m. tilt against Mercyhurst College. It will be Lake Erie's first game at the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic & Wellness Center since Dec. 1.
