PAINESVILLE, OHIO – With 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks, Lake Erie College senior Stephanie Rogers (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) recorded her first career triple-double and every one of the contributions was needed to help the Storm overcome a 19-point second half deficit in a 60-59 win over Ohio Dominican University at the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic & Wellness Center in Painesville, Ohio.
Rogers triple-double was just the fifth in Lake Erie women's basketball history and second to include blocks. The last triple-double of any kind for the Storm was in February of 1997.
The victory moved Lake Erie 15-5 overall and 9-4 in GLIAC play and into fourth place in the conference. Ohio Dominican fell to 6-15 overall, 2-13 GLIAC.
Rogers, who broke her previous career-high of eight blocks, was not alone in helping Lake Erie charge back into the game. Senior guard Jen Caiola (South Russell, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) and senior forward Alyssa Wagers (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) shared top scoring honors with 16 points apiece. All 16 of Caiola's points came in the scored half while Wagers added nine boards, falling one shy of her sixth double-double. Ohio Dominican was led by forward Katelyn Stuckey with 13 points.
Rogers scored the first basket of the game but the Storm did not score again for the next six minutes. That stretch was part of 16 straight misses from the field for the Green and White spanning over 12 minutes. A Wagers three-point play ended that slump and cut ODU's advantage to 17-8 at 7:40. However that's when the Panthers really took off as they buried four of their seven first half three-pointers in the next five minutes. ODU took a 37-21 advantage to the break as it shot 50.0% (12-of-24) in the first half while Lake Erie hit at a 14.8% (four-of-27) clip.
Ohio Dominican extended its lead to a game-high 19 points on two occasions, the last at 49-28 with 15:15, before Lake Erie starters, who did not leave the court during the final 20 minutes, started to close the gap. Trailing 50-33 with 13:32 to play, the Storm received a huge lift from layups by Wagers on three straight possessions. That run would extended 13-0 run as pairs of free throws from senior guard Cate Cianchetti (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) and Rogers and a Caiola three-pointer cut the deficit to four at 50-46 as 9:26 remained. A jumper by ODU's Abby Glover only briefly slowed Lake Erie as scored eight more consecutive points to extend the run to 21-2. Cianchetti tied the score at 52-52 with a pair of free throws at 6:10 and Caiola gave the Storm their first lead since the opening seconds, 54-52 minutes later..
A Panthers layup tied the score, but a Wagers layup and a Caiola three gave Lake Erie its largest lead at 59-54 as 2:08 remained. Kacee Hockenberry hit a three at 1:02 cut that lead to two and the Panthers regained possession at 31 seconds with a chance to tie or take the lead. Lake Erie's Caiola blocked ODU's three-point attempt but the Panthers immediately tied up possession after the Storm secured the rebound, giving them another chance with 16 seconds to play. Lake Erie again responded with a Rogers block, and this time the senior center was able to secure the rebound. She split a pair of free throws to put the Storm ahead, 60-57 with 13 seconds to play and then sealed the game, and her triple-double, by blocking Glover's game-tying three-point attempt in the final five seconds. ODU made a layup in the final second for the final margin.
Lake Erie went 11-of-23 (47.8%) from the field in the second half and finished the game 15-of-50 (30.0%). Ohio Dominican shot just eight-of-30 (26.7%) in the second half and 20-of-54 (37.0%) for the game.
The Storm return to action Thursday as they travel to face GLIAC North foe Ferris State University at 6:00 p.m.
