PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team was victorious in overtime over Malone today (February 5th), 62-58. With the win, the Storm improves to 9-13 overall and 4-11 in the conference and with the loss the Pioneers fall to 8-12 overall and 6-10 in conference play.
Lake Erie guard Sami Narducci (North Royalton, Ohio / North Royalton) opened the scoring when she made a jumper off of a Shelby Carpenter (Dayton, Ohio / Miami Valley) steal. The game started as a back and forth battle that saw six lead changes in the first six minutes of the game, with the score 13-13 with 13:26 remaining in the half. The Storm went on a 6-0 run that gave them a four point advantage, 19-15. The run was highlighted by a fast break layup by Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) off of a steal by Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor). After Malone tied the game the Storm went on an 8-2 run that gave them a six point advantage, 30-24. The run was highlighted by a three pointer by Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) off of an assist by Dawson. Lake Erie entered the intermission with a two point lead, 44-42.
Early in the second half, Malone went on a 6-0 run that cut the Lake Erie lead to one, 37-36. The run was ended by a pair of Carpenter foul shots. The majority of the second half was a back and forth battle that saw eight lead changes. Lake Erie forced overtime when senior Chloe Irish (LaGrange, Ohio / Keystone) made a jumper as time expired in the second half. Lake Erie rode the momentum to an overtime win, as they went on a 5-1 run in the overtime period. Irish put the game away when she hit a foul shot to give the Storm a four point advantage, 62-58.
The Storm was led by Irish who had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Gabor added a game high 15 points and four rebounds. Carpenter also had double-digit points with 10 and three assists. Dawson had nine points, eight rebounds, and four steals off the bench for the Storm.
Lake Erie will be back in action Saturday (February 7th) when they travel to take on Walsh at 1 P.M.
